Embraced

This project was created during the Artist in Aso Residency Program.

The feeling of being surrounded can have different connotations.
It can be suffocating and it can be accompanied by overwhelming anxiety. However, it can also be a very positive experience.

In the fall of 2019, I found myself in Aso, a small Japanese town laying in the shadow of an active volcano.
I was surrounded by mountains, but I did not feel like a captive.
If anything, it was the feeling one may have when receiving a hug from someone they like very much.

The Seventh Child

The project includes the translation of Georges Perec's La Disparition and the text that was based on the translation.
The translation was done without advance knowledge of the French language. Out of over 300 pages of the original text, 50 pages worth of translation were made.

La Disparition was written without the use of the letter e, which is the most common letter in the French language For that reason, to this day, the book poses a great challenge for translators all over the world.

La Disparition is also a good starting point for the discussion on language itself and the limits of translation. Perec's book was translated into English and Spanish. However, the question arises: is fully conveying the meaning of this work in a language other than French even possible? It may seem, that if we answer this question with negation, we deny ourselves reading the story. It is, however, worth remembering that Perec was very critical towards literature and he encouraged such an attitude in his readers. Contemporary writer Eric Beck Rubin declared that The only way to approach Perec is to move away from him. The farther you go, the closer you get. And so, the language barrier may turn out to be one of the best tools the readers have at their disposal.

Keeping to this belief, I decided to translate La Disparition, even though I only have a very basic knowledge of the French language. This is yet another limitation that, in a way, was forced on the reader by the author himself.
The translated text resembles a dream. It is chaotic and does not always make sense. At the same time, however, it is incredibly emotional. It can leave the reader feeling lost.
The holes in the text - result of insufficient knowledge of the French language - go well together with the book's title.

The meticulously constructed text was deconstructed.
This deconstruction, however, was not accidental. It was based on the strategies used by the author himself, as well as on the constructivist language theory, according to which every communique is also the instruction to how to read it - this concept can be easily applied to Perec's works.

The next step after making the translation was to take a stance on Perec's work and creating a sort of answer to what I managed to understand - or to what I think I managed to understand.
I decided one more time to take from strategies used by writers dealing with experimental literature. This time my point of reference was A man asleep (also by Georges Perec), which is build from sentences taken from other publications.



CYVILIZED

Cultural appropriation seems to be one thing that never goes out of fashion. Elle Canada calls dashiki - a traditional garment worn by man mostly in West Africa - a must-have item and Valentino puts replicas of the Bronze Head from Ife (depicting historic King of Ife people) on bags.
In 2000 Alexander McQueen went as far as calling one of his collection after a god of the Yoruba people, Eshu. What is more, designers often describe their Africa inspired collections with derogatory terms such as primitive, wild or tribal.

CYVILIZED is a fictional magazine in which photographs depicting the acts of appropriation are mixed with the actual statements of designers and journalists reviewing collections in question.

Monologue

As social creatures, we need to interact with each other.
We search for common ground. We look for similarities.
We want to be original in a way, but at the same time, we do not want to be totally separated from others.

Nowadays, we can witness an ongoing discussion regarding representation in the media. This suggests that people do have a strong need to identify with fictional characters. Finding someone who looks and/or acts as us can make us feel less alone.

Monologue was build from the statements of fictional characters
I identify with (or identified with at the time of making this video).
It is a confession created from the words of others who reminded me of myself.





Foundation
series of digital photographs, different sizes, 2015

The project focuses on the role medications can play in the lives of people struggling with chronic illness. Some hold the belief that pharmacotherapy is a solution to all of the illness’ related problems. However, closer to the truth is seeing it as a kind of foundation upon which one can build a life. Still, it is not particularly stable construction. As those captured in the photographs, it requires constant attention.

Bachelor Diploma at Maria Grzegorzewska’s Academy of Special Education in Warsaw, Institute of Art Education (currently College of Art Education); thesis supervisor: Stefan Paruch Ph.D.

Collection of 349 drawings referring to different aspects of mental health as well as physical health.
Created symbols were based on sketches and doodles from visual diaries, that I kept during the time preceding the diploma.
I used drawing to communicate my feelings and experiences that
I could not express verbally. The illustrations were exhibited in the form of a mind map to put all of these complicated things in order.







Again

Two photographs dealing with an attitude towards body - body that should be my own business, but is often entangled in different social contexts, judged, or even abused. Such misconducts can come from the outside but they are often internalized, leaving a person constantly fighting themselves.
